Leak right now? Shut off the water

Find the main shut-off valve. In most houses here it's in the basement where the water line comes through the front wall, near the meter. Condo? Look near your water heater or in a utility closet, or call building security.
Turn it clockwise until it stops. A lever valve is off when it sits across the pipe.
Open the lowest tap in the house to drain pressure.
Water near outlets or the panel? Stay out of the water. Only switch off the breaker from a dry spot.
Smell gas? Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.
